2. String on one pearl with a couple of inches of tail.
3. Using the pearl as one tail, tie an overhand knot so the pearl is a button with a knot below it.
4. Measure to your halfway point (7″ for a 14″ choker) and make an overhand knot in the leather.
5. String your second pearl, then make another overhand knot, tightening it close to the pearl.
6. This last step is the hardest when it comes to getting proper spacing. You want to make a loop at the end of the necklace that the pearl fits snugly into as your button closure.
7. Fold the tail over, then using the fold as a tail, make an overhand knot leaving a loop that fits the pearl and that is approximately the same distance away from the center pearl as is the pearl end.
8. It’s normal to have to re-do your end loop a few times to get the perfect length.
Being a storefront downtown Grand Haven, we get asked what fun things there are to do in Grand Haven all the time, so we decided to compile a helpful list! This list is perhaps fully accomplished in the summer, but most can be enjoyed year round!

Crystal quartz is known as the Spirit Stone, improving connections between the spiritual and physical world through its window of light containing the entire color spectrum. The crystalline structure is believed to hold information, making it highly programmable, meaning you can “program” the crystal with your intentions. It will then amplify these desires, prayers, and manifestations, transmitting your intentions from the spirit world to the physical world. To do this, relax and take a few deep breaths while holding your crystal, then while focusing on your crystal and clear intention, say the following or similar words to program your crystal: “I program this crystal for… (purpose or request).” This crystal will now be working for you ‘round the clock by aiding in the manifestation of your desires.
Whether you program it or not, even just having a quartz specimen improves the energetic quality of the room by absorbing energies and transmuting them to high, positive vibration. Wide leather jewelry lends a casual, boho chic look that lets everybody know you’re lovin’ life. It’s classic, it’s cool… but sometimes it’s a bit intimidating to work with on your own. Wide leather tends to be thick and stiff just off the spool, but that’s no reason to not make jewelry with it! And that’s because using rivets makes finishing wide leather jewelry easy!
So in this post, we’re going to show you how to punch a hole in your leather and attach a leather end piece using a metal rivet. With this technique, you can make something like this!
To begin, you’re going to need some tools and materials.
Flat Wide Leather
2 Leather Strap Ends
2-4 Sets of Rivets
Leather Punch Pliers
And now let’s get to the fun part and start making!
Measure out the length of leather you are using for your project. Be sure to subtract from the leather length the length of the clasp you will be attaching.
Place your leather strap end on the end of the leather and mark where the hole lands.
Using the largest hole on the leather punch pliers, punch a hole where you marked the leather.
The rivets we’re using and that we sell come as a pair. The back has a dimple on the bottom of it and the front looks like a little mushroom cap. The back rivet fits inside of the front one. Take the back rivet and put it through the back of the leather and the leather strap end. Take the top rivet and place it on top of the back rivet.
Place your piece on a bench block and using the flat end of the chasing hammer, hammer the rivet flat so it is tight and the leather strap end can’t move around. The goal is to flatten the rivet without hammering the strap end flat. Repeat on the other end.
And that’s it! From here, you can attach the clasp of your choosing and adorn your leather jewelry however you’d like! And with your new riveting in leather skill, the sky’s the limit!
July is just around the corner and with the beginning of each month comes the new Stone of the Month! Every month, one of our stone suppliers, Dakota Stones, picks their Stone of the Month and sends us a box of beads full of it in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes. This July’s Stone of the Month is the subtly gorgeous Wood Opalite.
Wood Opalite is actually petrified wood, with the original organic wood material being replaced with Silicon Dioxide over millions of years. Silicon Dioxide is commonly known as Opal, hence this stone’s name, Wood Opalite.
This truly unique stone is found in a wide range of patterns and colors, including creams, grays, browns, and reds. Its earthy tones are stunning against summer’s light wardrobe.
Wood Opalite represents patience and steady growth towards peace – things we can all use more of. As you can see, we have quite the selection to choose from, so stop in soon!
New African Beads
We’ve also got a new collection of African beads for you! These come from our favorite African bead seller, Ebrima Kabba, who just recently stopped by the store. He sells his beads throughout the U.S. after visiting Africa a few times per year and can often be found at the Bead & Button show. Check out what we got!
Pictured above, from top to bottom, are patterned seed beads from Nigeria, old African trade beads that were traded in Ghana, Nigerian seed beads, and African recycled glass beads.
Next, we have all sorts of different metal beads, with some of the smaller beads being from Nigeria. The larger black and silver beads are actually ebony and aluminum from Mali. And our favorite, the swirled brass barrels, are from Ghana.
This set of natural beads contains dark bone beads from Kenya, large, flat bone beads graduating in size, ancient shell beads, and myrrh from Malia.
Last up, we’ve got bone beads from Nigeria, more dark bone beads from Kenya, and even ostrich eggshell beads, being the cream and gray beads that are the third down in the above picture.
And this is just a sampling of what we’ve got! When you stop in, you’ll find we have even more new African finds, including finished necklaces and bracelets.
Come on down to check all of our new goodies out – we can’t wait to see you soon!
WELCOME! We’re so glad you’re here! It’s hard to believe that we’ve been around for 14.5 years and this is our first blog post… but so it goes. We offer so much help every day to our beloved customers in the store that it only makes sense to document the most commonly asked questions to serve as a resource for all jewelry makers! So with that in mind, our blog will teach you basic jewelry techniques, jewelry trends, unveil our new products, discuss local Grand Haven area happenings, and undoubtedly much more!
Summer is definitely here in our little beach town and one of the most popular jewelry materials is leather! And there’s no wonder leather is here to stay – it’s versatile, durable, comes in tons of different thicknesses, colors, and finishes so it goes with just about anything.
See what we mean?
It can be feminine or masculine – perfect for last minute father’s day gifts!
Not to mention that it’s simple, natural, and it can create the easiest adjustable necklace or bracelet, without a clasp!
This particular technique is often called a sliding knot or a slipknot. Knowing how to tie a sliding knot is a tremendous tool that will come in handy more often than you think. We tie them all the time! They’re great for kids who can’t or don’t want to use clasps and who grow an inch a day, for gifts when you don’t know the recipient’s preferred necklace length or wrist size, and for those times you just want something simple and easy to showcase a pendant or a few knotted beads on.
This is the classic sliding knot we’re talking about:
You’ll notice we have two leather strands on the far sides of the knots and three strands in the middle. This is because this particular design is using one looped piece of leather to connect to two different ends of the centerpiece. But don’t let this confuse you, the technique is the same!
First, you’ll want to take your desired bracelet or necklace size and double it to get the proper length for your adjustable leather piece. When everything is assembled, it’s time to tie your knots.
Cross your ends, one over the other, leaving about 4 inches on each end.
Choose your working cord (left or right) and double it back halfway through its tail; hold this fold with your thumb and pointer finger.
Take the end of the doubled back working cord and wrap it around all of the cords twice.
4. Now slide the working cord’s end back through the wrapping loops, exiting through the initial fold.
5. Pull the ends to tighten the knot.
6. Repeat these steps on the other side.
7. Glue each knot, making sure not to glue the knots to the cords that it needs to slide over, and trim the tails.
And, VOILA! That’s how to make a sliding knot!
By the way, we have tons of great pendants, wide-holed glass, clay, wood, and even pearl beads for you to design your perfect summer jewelry pieces!
So come on down to lovely Grand Haven and say hello! We’ll be here all week 😉
